In Eagan, a family’s backyard has been custom-tailored to nurture a love many of us share: a love of pizza. “The husband is a self-proclaimed world-traveling connoisseur of pizzas,” says Jim Saybolt, a principal of biota Landscape Design and Build in Minneapolis.
Naturally, the central element is a commercial-grade hybrid gas-and-wood Earthstone pizza oven, shipped from California (after receiving clearance from zoning, planning, electrical, and gas inspectors and the city’s fire marshal). The oven is flanked by marine-grade stainless steel outdoor kitchen cabinets and a Twin Eagles gas grill, with the entire structure veneered in Valders limestone. The kitchen’s bluestone countertops were designed with pizza in mind, too: They were custom polished, Saybolt says, “to provide the proper surface for kneading pizza dough.” A patio extending to an outdoor dining area and six-foot-wide grand staircase complete the space, while a water fountain at the base of the stairs provides calming pings of sound.
Nearby, a raised pizza-ingredient garden built of dry-stacked Valders limestone grows the herbs and vegetables that top the pies. “Rather than farm-to-table, their pizza toppings are yard-to-table,” Saybolt says. “The clients love it: They entertain the neighborhood, friends, and their landscaper often. It makes amazing pizza and makes for fun, interactive nights.”
