When a family in Edina wanted an ideal space for large gatherings, Minneapolis design group Ramsey Engler Ltd. helped them create an English-style pub in their own home. “We envisioned a space that felt as though it was tucked into the earth like a wine cave,” says Laura Ramsey Engler, design principal.
To achieve an authentic pub feel, Engler and her team designed an arched stone block back bar, flanked by two hand-planed, glass-front wood cabinets containing a variety of antique pewter. Leather-upholstered bar stools offer comfortable seating, while atypical lighting at the four corners of the bar, stone block pillars, and red brick flooring help to pull the space together. Because the homeowners also wanted to serve food and wine in the space, two individual wine rooms and a catering kitchen are located just off the bar area.
Ramsey is proud of her clients’ commitment to taking their design one step at a time in order to enjoy the process. “When homeowners are willing to continue looking at their spaces anew and take their time with the process, the end result shows incredible finesse,” she says.
