To create this desert chic look, we turned to the dynamic duo at Fiddlehead to design a room that left us feeling a little bit country and A LOT IN love with southwestern style.

It’s not every day you’ll see a room rich with hides, leather, skulls, and succulents in the heart of Edina, but the team at Fiddlehead Design Group eagerly tackled the challenge of creating a desert-inspired aesthetic for this Edina pool house.

Fiddlehead designers Andrea Dixon and Jen Ziemer took an eclectic approach and a few risks. They combined southwestern style, a little Turkish flair, a hint of Marfa, Texas, and, of course, their own touches.

To create the look, Dixon and Ziemer made the room as rich in textures and materials as possible. They started with the large console in the back of the room to give it a recycled/vintage vibe. From there, they added layers of rugs to incorporate a variety of materials and patterns. “Using those natural materials, such as hide and leather—or even distressed pottery and burlap—it’s all very popular for this look,” Ziemer says.

Through creative curation, Ziemer and Dixon were able to add depth without overcrowding the small space. “For example, the butterfly shape,” Ziemer says. “That shape is everywhere.” Yes, the butterfly chair is everywhere, but not everywhere in leather.

Though the southwestern aesthetic is not one Ziemer and Dixon see often in Minnesota, both designers hope Twin Citians will start to embrace it. “It’s a trend we love,” Dixon says. And fortunately, creating local twists on the look is becoming easier, because many of the elements the designers used are making their way into home stores around town. “That was fun to see,” Ziemer says.

What would be even more fun to see is more Minnesota cabin owners giving this look a try for a fresh twist on lakeside living. “Or at least a play on this look for Minnesotans,” Ziemer says. She and Dixon don’t get a lot of requests for skulls (at least not yet). But a hide at a cabin in Brainerd? Sounds like a perfect fit to us.
