Elizabeth Ries is used to multi-tasking. On the day of our photo shoot, she’s already been out and about, spiffed up her 1,100-square-foot bungalow, and will have just enough time after we wrap to buzz over to the set of Twin Cities Live for makeup and wardrobe. After the broadcast, she’ll head to the airport and catch a flight to Chicago for the weekend. So when she bought her home last fall, it wasn’t at all out of the ordinary for her to immediately decorate like crazy (fortunately her mom, Susie Ries, is an interior designer) and throw a dinner party a couple nights later.
“My friends threw a ‘stock the bar’ housewarming party where everyone brought a bottle, got a tag at the entrance, and wrote a note,” she says, nodding to the collection in her liquor cabinet which includes Absinthe, Chambord, and Lillet, to name a few.
“I also have a cookbook collection–I cannot stop buying them, and I read them,” she says. Beyond her dozens of cookbooks, Ries gets culinary and gardening ideas from the guests on her show and employs them at home, cooking with boyfriend Jay Reimers.
She loves to whip up creative salads, using veggies from both a local CSA (she has a juicer to squeeze out every last bit) and her own backyard. She inherited a garden from the previous homeowner, Rose Pearson, who started the nearby Victory Garden at Dowling Community Gardens. “I still get seed packets in the mail addressed to her, so I had to take on gardening!”
