How do I choose whether to use saline or silicone gel breast implants?

There are two main types of breast implants that are currently FDA-approved, and the board-certified surgeons at Edina Plastic Surgery have vast experience with both types of implants.

The type of implant that is best for you can depend on a number of factors, including your physical anatomy and your goals. Dr. Nathan Leigh, Dr. Robert Wilke or Dr. Michael Philbin will discuss the option with you at your free consultation so that you and your surgeon can determine which option is best.

It may be that either type of implant is a good option for you. Your surgeon will help you choose the style of implant that best matches your goals at your free consultation.

How do I decide what size implants to get?

Edina Plastic Surgery is the only practice in the state of Minnesota to have the Vectra XT 3D camera. When you come in for your free consultation, this state-of-the-art imaging system will allow you to see virtual “before and afters” on your own body—in many different views and angles. The system is so precise it can show you not only different sizes of implants, but the different types of profiles available as well.

What are the basic differences between saline and silicone gel breast implants?

The most important differences between saline and silicone implants are listed below:

SALINE

  • Saline implants are less expensive than silicone.
  • They are also firmer, but have more potential to ripple.
  • No matter what size implant you choose, saline can be used with a smaller incision.
  • Saline implants can be adjusted for their volume.

SILICONE GEL

  • Silicone gel is more expensive than saline.
  • The silicone tends to be softer and show ripples less
  • Gel implants require a bigger incision depending on the size of the implant
  • Because the gel is thicker and closer to the consistency of body tissue, silicone gel implants are the most natural feeling
