“There is no family or teen who is a lost cause or that cannot be helped by beginning a therapeutic relationship with a nurse.”

"I was invited to a graduation of a former patient at her charter school. On the stage were four other girls that had completed the Runaway Intervention Program."

“I needed a job. I did not think this would be my job. I didn’t think I would fall in love with it. But then I started doing it.”

“When I began my career 14 years ago in Minnesota, sexually exploited youth were considered incorrigible. People would tell me that ‘those teens’ are a lost cause,” Laurel Edinburgh says. Not so anymore. “Sexual exploitation is now viewed by the public, police, prosecutors, and policymakers as a form of severe child abuse.”

That shift in thinking is thanks, in part, to Edinburgh, who started the Runaway Intervention Program to serve teens who’ve been beaten and sexually assaulted. Edinburgh’s research shows that after a year in an intervention program, abused teens exhibit fewer signs of emotional distress and risky behaviors. “They have such interesting life stories,” Edinburgh says. “They are figuring out their own natural strengths and how to make abuse a piece of their life but not the defining event.”
