Wine with Your Burger? Yes!!
Bill Coy shares his picks for the best burger/wine combinations
AUGUST IS FOR BURGERS. From eight-story architectural wonders to patties dripping with exotic sauces, burgers are on every grill in town. Whether it’s Vincent or Five Guys, your grill or mine, please don’t forget the wine. This month’s selections are from France 44 Wines, 4351 France Ave. S., Mpls., 612-925-3252.
SAGE TURKEY BURGER WITH GOAT CHEESE
Giesen Sauvignon Blanc 2010
(Marlborough, New Zealand)
• This crisp, clean wine with notes of grapefruit and lemon works with a lighter style of burger. And you get bonus points for doing something healthy.
LAMB BURGER WITH COARSE GROUND MUSTARD
La Réméjeanne Côtes du Rhône 2009
(Rhone Valley, France)
Grapes: Grenache, syrah, mourvedre.
• Spices, nutmeg, and allspice balance out the dark plum flavors and earthy nose. This would be a classic pairing with lamb chops; just put the meat on a bun this time and add smoked gouda.
CALIFORNIA BURGER WITH AVOCADO
Morgan's Crow's 2009
Grapes: Grenache, syrah
• Go California with California, and a rich full fruit wine with dark cherry and blueberry, balanced with full tannins. The avocado adds fat that complements both the burger and the wine.
BACON BLUE CHEESEBURGER WITH GRILLED ONIONS
Marietta Zinfandel 2009
• Big burgers need big wine. The full fruit and acid in this zin holds up to all that fat and protein. Plus it may be the healthiest part of the meal.
