Where to Find the Right Wine

Wine expert Bill Coy helps with the "where" part of finding the perfect wines

Katherine Harris

This month, I’ll help you with the “where” part of finding the perfect wines, from those California cabs you have only heard about to the best of Burgundy or bubbles. We are very lucky to have many great wine shops from which to choose and experts that offer the help you need. Here are a few...

Burgundy(and the rest of France)

Trust me, the people at Haskell’s know Burgundy. Their selection of Burgundy wines, both white (chardonnay) and reds (pinot noir), is as broad as it is deep. They have all price ranges and include many hard-to-find “special occasion” wines. Thirteen metro locations including 81 S. 9th St., Mpls., 612-333-2434,

California Big Hitters

To carry the big-name California cabernet and chardonnay producers, you have to sell a lot of wine and support those brands. Phil Colich and his team at Hennepin Lake Liquors do just that. If you want that hard-to-find big wine to impress your boss, this store is your best bet. 1200 W. Lake St., Mpls., 612-825-4411,

German options (including Alsace)

Whether it’s riesling or pinot blanc, sweet or dry, Surdyk’s is a gem for its German selection. From inexpensive everyday whites to hard-to-find collector’s wines, the selection is fantastic and prices are excellent. 303 Hennepin Ave. E., Mpls., 612-379-3232,

If you’re looking for Italian prosecco or California sparkling, Spain’s cava or actual French champagne, or some very unique bubbles from all over the world, you’ll find them at The Cellars. If you need a reason to drink bubbles, besides “the sun came up this morning,” The Cellars can help you. Five metro locations including 2701 Lincoln Dr., Roseville, 651-636-4404,

Help with the details

The staff at Pairings and Solo Vino give ideas and point you in the right direction. You leave feeling like you’ve learned something. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and feel free to tell them your real price range. Pairings, 6001 Shady Oak Rd., Minnetonka, 952-426-0522,; Solo Vino, 517 Selby Ave., St. Paul, 651-602-9515,

A place that has it all

France 44 Wines & Spirits is a beautiful, spacious store with a large selection that covers most of the wine world. Plus, there’s a helpful, knowledgeable staff, a very cool beer selection, and a great cheese shop attached. 4351 France Ave. S., Mpls., 612-925-3252,
