Let’s do Spain, via wine, for Valentine’s Day this year.

Spanish wines over-deliver in their price range and are still something new and exotic for many. Selection from South Lyndale Liquors, 5300 Lyndale Ave. S., Mpls., 612-827-5811, southlyndale.com
Toro Albala “PX” Gran Reserva 1985 (Cordoba, Spain) $33.99
• This wine is special. It’s sweet but earthy, smoky with chocolate and coffee notes. It’s one of the finest dessert wines in the world. I love to drizzle it over truly good vanilla ice cream.
Juve y Camps Grand Reserva Cava 2008 (Penedes, Spain) $16.99
• A great start, citrus and peach fruit abound in this crisp, clean wine that has a nose like a buttered croissant. Pair it with fresh fruit or a light style of cheese.
Basa Rueda 2012 (Rueda, Spain) $15.99
Verdejo, viura, sauvignon blanc
• With a nose like summer flowers and bright lime acid, this one gives you a break from winter. The hint of stony minerals balances it out. Try it with your favorite shrimp dish.
M2 de Matallana 2008 (Ribera del Duero, Spain) $39.99
Tempranillo (called tino fino in Ribera del Duero)
• You’ll pick up on earth, dark cherry, cedar, and vanilla, with a recognizable Spanish spice and a bit of chocolate in this wine. Pair it with a worthy cut of red meat.
