One Great Plate: Croque Monsieur/Madame

One Great Plate: Croque Monsieur/Madame

This little Frenchy grilled ham and cheese sandwich is EVERYWHERE these days. Though it originated in French taverns as a quick snack, locally you’ll find it mostly on brunch menus. The high-falutin sounding name can be translated to Mr. Crunchy, and it becomes a Madame or Ms. Crunchy only when an egg is added on top. Type of cheese used can really be anything, but traditionally you’ll find Emmental or Gruyere along with a b├ęchamel sauce, making it taste like a sturdy little fondue. Try The Kenwood’s version at your leisure as they have brunch every day, sometimes you can pick up a Monsieur from the deli at Surdyk’s, and late-night noshers will happily find both genders at Barbette after 10pm (as well as weekend brunch).
