Where and What to Eat
City Lunch: Depot Tavern
What's for lunch? Our editor's pick of where to eat on your lunch break.
Full bar, lots of seating, full service. It’s a little like playing hooky. Why shouldn’t you sneak over to the Depot Tavern, where maybe you go sometimes pre- or post-First Ave action. The bright room is open for lunch, and on a nice day, the garage door wall is up, and it’s a great escape from office life.
You know about the burgers and dogs, but did you know they griddle up a mean grilled cheese sandwich? The Caprese is a natural choice, but don’t overlook the Monte Cristo with ham, turkey, Swiss, a fried egg and blackberry preserves. It brings that salty sweet thing to a crisp and melty end. Also, the bacon and pepper-jack on whole wheat ( I throw a little avocado on there), do it. It’s also a great spot to stop if you’re skipping out on work for a Twins game, because there’s beer. And shrimp and grits poppers.
