Northbound Smokehouse & Brewpub

It’s the little brewpub that could! After discovering a great location while pursuing the dream of opening their own spot, owners Jamie Robinson, Bryce Strickler, and Amy Johnson found themselves a little short on cash. Bankers, initially unfriendly to the group of newbies, were forced to take a second look when the team raised about $160,000 through crowdfunding, selling “memberships” to their future brewpub with a promise of free beer for life for certain member levels. Now open and cranking, this neighborhood pub is busy brewing beer and smoking meats. The small kitchen puts out smoked fish platters and smoked turkey, porchetta, and beef sandwiches. All go quite well with the four year-round beers and two seasonals on rotation: Check out the Wild Rice Amber if it’s still around. Let’s hope investors are smart enough not to drink all the profits dry. 2716 E. 38th St., Mpls., 612-328-1450, www.northboundbrewpub.com
