Kitchen Island
While creating additional living space was the objective, the homeowners’ highest priority was to make sure the new spaces blend seamlessly with the existing home’s architecture and exquisite detailing. Working with local architect and Arts & Crafts expert Joseph G. Metzler, a 12x21 single story addition was created to house the new kitchen, back entry and “inglenook.”

Kitchen Galley
The new modern-functioning kitchen features detailed custom cabinetry, Celadon Green Glaze subway tile, traditional honed soap stone counters, pushbutton lighting controls and an old-world color palette to create a soft, inviting atmosphere. The new kitchen space demonstrates the melding of contemporary engineering with classic craftsmanship.

Kitchen Details
In the 1920s, local oak was sourced and milled for the cabinetry, doors, floors, and millwork. To match these varying cuts of locally harvested wood, a mixture of riffed and plain sawn white oak was used in similar ratios to the original home.

Ying-Yang Floor Detail
Designed by the homeowner, the Marmoleum Ying-Yang inlay, located in the new back hallway, was laser cut and assembled on site.

Traditional Inglenook
To enhance the original home, a traditional Craftsman fireplace inglenook was created just off the kitchen prep area.

Handmade Tile
The Inglenook adorns custom handmade tile and built-in bench seating with hidden storage drawers below.

Details
The homeowners’ desire for exceptional detailing can be seen throughout the new and renovated spaces. Antique and replica decorative light fixtures appear like jewels throughout the renovated and new spaces.

Chef Andre
The owners were dedicated to keeping the house small and appropriate to its original scale. Still, Homeowner Andre, an amateur chef, wanted a serious kitchen worthy of his creations.
Craftsman Kitchen
This Arts & Crafts foursquare, originally constructed in 1923, resides in a quaint neighborhood near one of Minneapolis’ premier lakes. When the current homeowners purchased the property in 1987, they knew an addition would be part of their future As avid cooks, the homeowners agreed that the existing 7’x9’ kitchen was efficient, but didn’t come close to being functional by today’s standards.
