“What is post family man? What am I supposed to rap about now?” Slug asks on Atmosphere’s website.
It’s a question even us non-rapper parents must ask ourselves.
Slug continues to rap about his life, even if it’s as (insert ironic Gen-X tone here) mundane and uncool as family life. And he does it with a strong sense of place and full commitment. The video for "Southsiders", released just a few days ago, is excellent evidence. It’s also a beautiful ode to summer-in-the-city parenting.
Because how else does a rapper daddy rep his ’hood when he’s raising three kids in it?
The laceless green Crocs, the tie-dyed headbands, the bluest-of-blue kiddie pool—all on a leafy "Southside" street lined with bungalows. This really is Minneapolis parenting, yo! There are our damn kids, in the damn street, battling their dad with the biggest damn double-barreled squirt guns from the Bloomington Toys “R” Us.
Note: Slug is outnumbered and outgunned. We feel you, bro!
The Minnesota Nice t-shirts. The East Lake Liquor t-shirts. Everyone on a BMX bike. Only in Minneapolis would our biggest rapper make a video where he both wins and loses at parenting, from an album that includes a song called “Kanye West" that includes the refrain, “Put your hands in the air like you really do care.” This really is how we do it here.
Friday night’s Atmosphere show at First Avenue is sold out. No one will be bringing kids. It’s indie rap, but it’s still rap, and daddy still has to work. Then Slug and Ant are off to spread the Southside pride around the world for a bit.
They’ll be back at First Avenue on November 23. JuiceBox recommends you order up your Minneapolis babysitter ASAP. The whole damn neighborhood will want to be there.
