Two-and-a-half-year-old Maddie channels a different character every day, with favorites including Cinderella, Bambi, Ariel, and occasionally Santa Claus. She took in a late-morning production of Balloonacy at the Children’s Theatre Company on Wednesday.
The show runs through May 4.
To her dog upon departure: Chester, we’re going to see a play about a grumpy old man. Just like you, Chester!
Upon being recognized as Maddie: I’m Cinderella. I’m wearing a tutu today.
On receiving slipper socks: They’re kind of purple and they have faces on them. Oh, they’re comfy. You need some, too! Oh, wear some!
[Editor’s Note: Children’s Theatre Company provided polar fleece “puppet slipper socks” to audience members of all ages to wear during the play. Impromptu puppet slipper plays commenced in the lobby shortly thereafter. Except for Maddie, who preferred to perform arabesques in the middle of the room.]
On the theater and set: It’s big in here. It looks like a house.
Upon seeing the old man (film and television actor Robert Dorfman): He looks grumpy. Oh, he’s eating spaghetti and pop, just like Lady and the Tramp!
When the balloon appears: It’s tricky! He’s playin’ hide and seek, isn’t he? It’s in the microwave!
On being misted with water: The old man squirted pop on all the kids and he squirted pop on you, too! It was a surprise. Kids like when that happens.
When the old man dances with the balloon: Look, he’s so happy right now!
Her thoughts on where the old man lives (Paris): He lives in the theater. Oh, I want to live in the theater, too!
On meeting the old man after the show: He’s surprising! He made funny faces. [Laughs]
Her favorite part: The slipper socks. I need some of those, Mama.
