It’s a fact of wedding planning that things are bound to go wrong. Communication breaks down, human error takes its tolls, and life happens. Everything always works out in the end, but I’ve realized that hitting these bumps now is great practice for later. Our first bump in the road came in the form of our save-the-dates.
I started my Save-the-Date search back in September. I really struggled with finding something that was in line with my vision, original, and affordable. Though I’ve seen some really fun photo save-the-dates, I wanted something a little more formal and I also wanted something that matched my invites, whatever those may look like.
Once I met with Antoinette at Paperista, I felt confident that she understood my vision for formal invites and save-the-dates with a trendy twist—all that worked together. Since we weren’t finding this from any books, we decided that custom was the best way for me to go.
We went through rounds of proofs, deciding where to letterpress, where to use calligraphy, which colors to use, etc. After a number of comfortable conversations with the design team, we placed the order. As the weeks went by, we worked at collecting addresses for our save-the-date list, so when they were ready to go, we were ready to go. Here’s where Problem No. 1 occurred.
I continued to put the guest list conversation off with my parents because I don’t think any of us wanted to face the harsh reality of the fact that we need to cut down on our list. My mom was working diligently to gather addresses, but I was halfheartedly trying, and I hadn’t even asked The Fiancé to start gathering his. Because of this mediocre attempt on my part, by the times the save-the-dates were ready, our list wasn’t. Now we’re still gathering in attempt to get the mailings out before the Christmas rush . . . we're nearly there!
Problem No. 2 happened when our save-the-date cards came in. Antoinette called me and asked me to come in because she had some concerns with the color we had chosen for the edge painting on the paper—I realize how cliché that sounds: Concerns . . . with edge painting? But somehow the pale pink color we had chosen to subtly accent the card got darker when it was in such a condensed area and it came out looking bubble gum pink—not exactly the formal and sophisticated effect I was going for. Antoinette suggested we take the cards to a local printer and we simply shave off the edges—thankfully, she handled it all, and aside from this declaration, our guests would be none the wiser.
Big picture, this was a small, small problem. And it was handled swiftly and efficiently, two key elements in dealing with issues. Here’s hoping the rest are just as easy. I’m guessing that may be wshful thinking, but that’s what a wedding planner is for, right?We're aiming to have the Save-the-Dates printed and ready to go by Monday. Once they are safely out the door, I'll post pictures!
