Can you believe how much emotional dust was kicked up with the news that Rainbow would be packing up and leaving town? The old Facebook feed was just jammed with re-postings and kvetchings and all manner of worrying about what would happen to the old stores: Would they become Cubs or Byerly’s? Would they stay or would they go? I have to be honest, I didn’t love Rainbow, and the one by me in the WeSubs (Plymouth) was a wee bit icky and dirty. While I did love the selection of Jarritos and their effort to offer some all-natural brands, I hate bagging my own groceries … downright loathe it all together. Watching all my stuff chugging down the belt to the end and jamming like an ice flow, then feeling the pressure and disdaining gaze of the un-shaven guy behind me with his family pack of Slim-Jims and Dew to bag it fast and get out of his way . . . well that’s just a trigger I don’t need.
Union Fish Market has closed. Again. The main level of Kaskaid’s newest downtown spot is being remodeled and reconcepted, this time with Culinary Director Stewart Woodman at the helm. The rooftop at Union will remain open.
Five Watt Coffee is open in Kingfield, across from Kyatchi. Owners Caleb and Lee are self-declared jesters, the front wall is a garage door that opens to the street, and they have unicorn stables they rent by the hour. Also, Sunday Service includes an oatmeal bar with a truck load of toppings and live music. Yeah, we can hang.
Red River Kitchen is the name of the freshly launched food truck from the gang at The Republic. The truck will not partake in the downtown lunch circus, but will instead hang out at taprooms and events (supporting the local brews like they do). The menu will be a street version of Keven Kvalston favorites from the pubs, look for that killer Wild Acres duck burger and some serious sausages and brats.
LoLo American Kitchen in Stillwater opened earlier this week. The slick urban-looking spot is offering a pretty big menu of small plates, street food, steaks, and chops, plus craft beers and fresh cocktails.
Galaxy Drive-In opened this week! Peppermint Twist did too! And Sandcastle opens on Saturday!
Corner Table 3.0 is open in its new space, the former La Chaya on the corner of 46th and Nicollet. It’s got that new restaurant smell, tinged with a bit of braised meat, and has more kitchen bar seating, lovely dark wood banquets, and a wall of windows to let in the night. The old spot will become Revival, a fried chicken shack sometime later this summer.
Just down the block Hola Arepa has thrown open the doors on its new building. Just across from Pat’s Tap, the tropical blue accented spot makes you feel like you’re on vacation . . . or wait, maybe that’s the new cocktail menu being served through the patio side bar. Whichever, go with it.
Mill City Farmers' Market opens officially this weekend!
Far North Spirits is launching its new spiced rum, Alander, this weekend. Go in for a sip at South Lyndale Liquors on Saturday from 2-5 p.m.
And tune into the Weekly Dish this weekend where Chef Jack Riebel will be my co-host.
