So there we were, stranded at JFK International last night. As our flight that had been delayed for 2 hours, was again pushed for another 2, (before then being pushed for another 2), we decided to switch terminals in search of better food. For some logistical reasons during last week’s trip we got screwed out of a stop at Shake Shack. And yet, wonders never cease, there’s one in Terminal 4 on the B Concourse. We dragged ourselves and belongings to battle through shuttles and Germans and an Ohio State softball team to get there. And in my mind I thought, no way can an airport burger be as good as “All That” and for sure this would be another disappointment. Well. Not only were the service workers at the counter friendlier, smiling, and disarming people left and right of their well-earned bad moods, that burger was LEGIT. The fries were perfectly done and salted righteously, my black & white malt was thick and cold, and that double Shackburger was juicy, crunchy on the edges, gooshing with Shacksauce in all the right corners, and life-affirming. It was worth the hype, IN THE AIRPORT nonetheless. Well played Mr. Meyer, well played.
Well, Birchwood Cafe has a fresh new look and finally open again to the savory waffle eating world! Tracy Singleton and Marshall Paulson have a sleek and contemporary new place to whip up killer carrot ginger soup, moist and delicious turkey burgers, and that breakfast of champions. Also, my fellow Tour de Franc-o-philes, TS says the big screen will be up in the back room so that we might cheer and jeer the peleton like we like to on a fresh summer morn.
This is the weekend to head out to the lake, and this is your best pre-gaming stop: Excelsior Brewing’s Taproom is officially spiffed up, relaunched, and open for fun. Saturday there will be tents, live music, shuffle board, ring-a-ding, and Red River Kitchen food truck to provide sustenance.
Guten tag, hier ist Spargelfest! Get down with some spears and alpenhorn at Black Forest tonight to kick off Spring with spargel pierogi, spargel crisps with caviar, even spargel rhubarb strudel!
Summer in the cities means it’s time to eat elegantly outside. There’s no better way to do that than the two Dinner in White pop-ups/flash-mobs that happen in town, and both have released dates. The first group to launch these fabulous dinners, Dinner in White (Diner en Blanc) MSP, has announced on their Facebook page a date of June 21. This one is free, and strictly bring your own, but you do need access to the Facebook group to be told the location of the picnic on the day of. The second group, Popup Twin Cities, has announced their dinner date of August 16. This one requires tickets, but provides the tables, and donates a chunk to the Minneapolis Parks Foundation. Neither dinner’s location will be announced until a few hours before, that’s the fun. That and all the Insty friendly photos when a couple thousand people wear white and gather for a picnic.
Boneyard is kickin' up some dust and hosting an Uptown Hoedown on June 14-15 in their parking lot. They plan on live music, local beer and drinks, plus a mess of Southern BBQ that includes whole hogs, ribs, brats, and just … meat. Basic tix are $20 but VIP is $80 and nets you extra BBQ and beverage sampling, access to a separate beverage garden, a separate BATHROOM!!!, and a $25 Uber credit. Smart.
