Last night, Dara and I had the pleasure of being guests at a dinner honoring our three local James Beard Award winners: Tim McKee, Alex Roberts, and Isaac Becker. On this Fresh Forkin' Friday, the eve of the 2012 awards, I have been thinking about how interesting it was to see the level of calm amongst them. Well none of them are up for one this year, and Lenny, who is, wasn't there. But I was thinking about this question a set of young restaurateurs asked me about what was the trick, how could they get noticed enough to get a Beard nomination. I don't have the answer for that, but all I could think about was the fact that Alex's Alma has been around since 1999, the Becker-St. Pierre super-team has been at it more than 7 years on their own (after a long era of working for others), and we all know McKee is as old as the hills! Alma has quietly been sitting in the same spot just cranking out great food, Alex has hired no PR agency, hasn't tooted his own horn endlessly, he's just head-down done the work. Maybe the young bucks need to stop thinking about how to fame-game the system and bear down and cook. ***** OPENS
George & The Dragon opened this past Monday. It looks like a pubby affair, so sharpen up your best fake British accent so you can pop in and order some bangers & mash, a cheese toastie, or the nightly curry as you talk on your mobile while standing on line.
Angel Food Bakery & Coffee bar is in soft-opening this week. It's light and bright and brimming with bready smells. (PS ... check out this Gordon Ramsey message to our own Hell's Kitchen for the 10th anniversary!)
The Harriet Brasserie is also open for biz. The former Cafe Twenty-Eight (NOT 128 Cafe, which I seem to keep messing up!!) in Linden Hills is open for breakfast and lunch while it waits for full liquor license approval. There's some interesting Latin-American influence to the menu, can't wait to see how it all fleshes out.
The beer garden at Butcher & The Boar opens up officially this Saturday.
Solera has officially relaunched Rooftop Movie Night for the summer! See you at The Goonies!
El Burrito Mercado is coming to Minneapolis!! Teams are working right now on a new location in the corner of the Midtown Global Market. You can expect the same great salsas, a cafe, market, and shop nicely located on this side of the river.
Burch's Pharmacy will soon become Burch ... a meat-centric restaurant from the Isaac Becker-Nancy St. Pierre team behind 112 Eatery and Bar La Grassa.
