So. You all know that besides my Jayhawk, I have one child installed at NYU, which is nice for him. Somehow, in the discussion of holidays and flights, it turned out to be cheaper to fly the Jayhawk to JFK than to MSP so a plan was hatched for them to have Thanksgiving in New York. Then, somehow, the 17 y.o. wormed his way into the equation and now they are all going to be there together. Without me. How did I end up paying for a New York vacation weekend from which I am excluded? I've always wanted to hit NYC for the turkey holiday, but have never been able to make it work. In truth I knew this was going to happen. As soon as I left that kid in his SoHo dorm, I knew that I would soon be ending my reign as family Queen of Gotham. The next generation is rising and they won't need my knowledge of neighborhoods, my subway acumen, my uncanny luck with cabs. Indeed, I am excited to hear about their New York, the one they get to discover and know without me. This Fresh Forkin' Friday I am grateful for fresh eyes.
Ch-Ch-Ch-Charlies! Do you have tix to the biggee event? Who will win? Who will trip across the stage (read: me)? How many people will be hungover from the Butterball? Can't wait.
You can NOW by tickets to the Beer Dabbler's Winter Carnival event. Sampling beer outside in the dead of winter is celebrating everything it means to be a Minnesotan, imho. There are lots of improvements this year (St. Paul farmers market location, a jumbotron, thrice as many potties), those tix will sell out, get off your duff and commit.
If you're using this weekend as prep for next week's feast, take a trip down to Ferndale Market for the Turkey Fest. So much fun, so many good ingredients, it will clearly get you in the cooking mood.
Wake up for Calhoun Square's Coffee Fest this Saturday. It's a good time to get your buzz on and hit Kitchen Window to load up on gadgets for the feast.
Listen up this weekend on the Weekly Dish, we'll be delving into pie with John Michael Lerma, offering up our crowd-sourced and chef's favorite side dishes, and generally making you hungry. Saturday 1-2 p.m. 107.1.
