DeRusha Eats at The Holidazzle Mpls. Market

I know it’s prom season, and I superbly wish I could have received a KFC chicken corsage when I was a shiny girl in a shiny dress with shoes dyed to match. Alas. So this is the first time in some six years that I will not be attending some sort of prom event (the pre-pictures at some country club, the Grand March where I silently mock dresses, a surreptitious drive-by of the dance itself) so I will have to dispense my usual Prom Night advice instead to all of you, who may or may not have prom attendees: If you are going out to dinner, act like your date’s mother is watching you and tip 20 percent because you’re drinking soda. Also, don’t have sex, because that’s so cliché.
Let’s get at this . . .
>>Heyday is now open off Lyndale, and what was formerly a scuzzy laundromat is now a hot, hot spot with Jim Christiansen behind the stoves, Lorin Zinter schmoozing the door, and Diane Yang whipping the cream. Can you say Young-Buck-Dream-Team? The space is rustic/chic, the drinks are fresh without being too boozy, and the menu is stacked with modern plates that are creative and composed, with seasonal ingredients such as nettles and ramps, that are so far, damn yummy.
>>The Suburban in Excelsior is officially open tonight. The Kickstarted spot has had some delays in opening, but will finally tonight bring some fresh burgers, pizza, and beer options to the lake town. They’re using Peterson Farms Limousin beef, their dogs and brats are being made at Mackenthun’s Meats, and there’s a psychotic love of multiple fonts on the menu. Good. Times.
>>JL Beers has opened its first big city outpost in Nordeast. The Fargo-based chain is all about craft beers and burgers, which are thin patties (the basic is less than $4!) Plus hand-cut chips and fries, beer cocktails, and a very dude-friendly atmosphere. Here’s what: No one under 21 is allowed in the door, so baby-toters stay back, even if your kid doesn’t drink. And this: no tap water, you have to buy a bottle, and another bottle if you’re still thirsty. Booooo.
>>The Minneapolis Farmers' Market is open for the season this weekend!!! St. Paul is jumping off next weekend, but winter market folks will still be there this weekend.
>>The doors at Flat Earth Brewery’s new location have been swung widely open, with intent. Growler sales start at noon.
>>Bayport BBQ has opened its patio for the season, and helloooooo they’ve added Nashville hot chicken to the menu!! Sweet babies, this is spicy hot, buttermilk fried chicken served on white bread with pickles. Eaten with a side of deep blues, what could go wrong?
>>Coalition is coming to Excelsior, what’s going on over there?!
>>Perhaps Kim Bartmann is coming to Loring Park, perhaps not.
>>One Two Three Sushi is heading over to St. Paul, opening a skyway outpost in the US Bank Center in early June.
>>Also, the True Thai space was originally going to be rebooted as Drunken Sake, but the new owners have reconsidered and are going with a new name: Sober Fish. Which is one way to go.
>>Two drinky things the modern cocktailer doesn’t want to miss: Sunday night is the 5-year anniversary party for the Bradstreet Craftshouse crew. Alums and original members will be in attendance to show of their aged shaking skills. Plus drinks and snacks, natch. Then on Wednesday, you should check out the Pierre Ferrand cocktail dinner at Eat Street Social, because Nick and Ira just got back from Paris and all they brought you was a night full of drinks and eats. Bastards.
>>You gotta love the festive atmosphere of a pre-sale party. Beer Dabbler tickets for both Pride and the Summer Dabbler at Midway Stadium will go on sale this Tuesday, April 29 from 6-9 p.m. only at Bryant Lake Bowl and Pat’s Tap. You’ll enjoy $5 off ticket price, no ticket fees, happy hour specials, and of course the superiority of knowing you have tix in your hot little hands before they go on sale to the general public April 30.
>>Hey Taco Cat, here are the things we will barter for tacos.
>>I’ll be live broadcasting Weekly Dish this Saturday out at El Burrito Mercado in St. Paul, come down if you want to watch Robin Asbell shop the market and squeeze some ultra fresh juice!
