Mpls Designer Up For 'Unusual Space' Award
By: Allison Kaplan | Posted: 07/20/2014
Set the DVR for this week's premiere of Project Runway season 13, which will feature Twin Cities designer Tim Navarro.
A self-taught designer, Navarro's expertise is in menswear and tailoring, which could be a distinct advantage on the show, where contestants tend to fall short when required to show off technical skills.
A fixture on the local fashion scene, Navarro has been designing with his twin brother, Thom Navarro, under the Tim + Thom label. He said Project Runway producers have been encouraging the two to try out for the show for three years, and this year, they went for it. Tim Navarro says his brother has no hard feelings. "We've always been really competitive. We want our own identities an voices." The two recently closed their You and Me boutique in Uptown and joined a group of event producers, designers and artists to start a production company called Cult Collective.
Navarro is the sixth Minnesotan to appear on Project Runway. He says he hopes to turn the national spotlight on the local fashion community. "I think we're pretty dynamic. There's a lot of talent here."
Navarro isn't at liberty to say much about the show iteself, which is judged this season by host Heidi Klum, veteran magazine editor Nina Garcia and designer Zac Posen. Contestants are known to get precious little time with the judges beyond the runway reviews. "I don't really watch the show, so I had no preconceived notion of them," Navarro says. "Opportunities were limited, but they were pretty nice."
Project Runway, premieres Thursday, July 24, 8 p.m. on Lifetime.
