There are so many exciting things you get to do when planning for a wedding. Making a gift registry is just another one of those fun tasks—or so I thought.
The whole concept became more and more terrifying as I prepared to actually create my registry. So instead of getting totally overwhelmed, my fiancé and I attended Crate & Barrel’s Registry Event last week. It was a great opportunity for us to try out the store’s products, meet some local vendors (Nothing Bundt Cakes and Common Roots were there), and then take the steps to actually register with the help of the experts and the C&B registry app.
Here’s what I wish I would have known before heading into this crazy world of scanners, table settings, and flatware.
1). Know what you as a couple wants for the style of your home. We found out in-store that I love clean, classic white for the kitchen and Eric loves the wood and bamboo look. If we had talked about it beforehand we may have been better prepared to make that work together.
2). Get an idea of what you like before you go. Going in to the event, I had an idea of what I wanted, but it turned out that what I wanted came in about 20 different styles. Did we want the classic white tableware, or did we want white, but in a more modern style? Eric, like many men, only noticed color and huge style differences, so figuring out the nuances of each product was left to me. Take a look at the retailer’s website beforehand and find out what you both like, what you don’t like, how many place settings you need, and things of that nature. Which leads me to my next point. It would be a huge help if you . . .
3). Bring a list. With the vast array of products that Crate and Barrel offers, we figured we’d just go through each section to figure out what we needed. In hindsight we should have made an itemized list of what we needed for each room so we could check things off as we went through the store. We spent a lot of time looking through each section, but found out that we should have done more research.
4). Remember you can go back and also fill up your registry online. The event overwhelmed us, but in a good way. We got a feel for everything we liked and needed and we decided to finish off our list online or with another stop in the store later on. We went home to figure out more of what we needed and filled up the list that way.
5). Register for three items per guest in a range of prices. We want to give our guests options, so we tried to avoid the mistake of registering for fewer items than the number of people we invited. It helps to register at two to three retailers so guests not only have options of products, but also on the stores they’ll shop at.
