Planning a wedding takes superhuman amounts of energy—and time—so why not cut yourself some slack? Consider a one-stop shop, known in this biz as a catering hall. They're wildly popular in our smaller sister city, Milwaukee, but our fair Twin Cities boast a healthy number of these halls as well.
At Mpls.St.Paul Weddings, we hear from oodles of couples who've chosen this route and loved the package deal. Catering and event halls won't land your big day in the pages of InStyle Weddings, but they won't break your budget either.
One most famous local institution is Prom Catering, a weddings (and prom, natch) powerhouse since 1941. Based at the Oakdale Prom Center, the company boasts a large venue and event catering company all into one. From non-profit functions to weddings, the Twin Cities hot spot has hosted and served up delicious custom dishes for seven decades.
Opened in 1941 by Harry Given, Prom Catering fed the masses that flocked to the popular Prom Ballroom dance hall on University Avenue in St. Paul. Alas, the old stomping grounds went the way of the drive-in movie theater, but brothers Tom and Bill Given carried on the local catering tradition on a much larger scale. Harry's sons have expanded their services to an array of off-site events, including golf tournaments nationwide. Prom also catered almost 1,000 events around the Twin Cities in 2010.
Newlyweds Stephanie and Corey Carlson are still talking about their big day at Prom, some six months later. The couple says it took about a year to plan their entire wedding, but just weeks to pick the event center. “We thought about renting a hall, like a VFW, but decided to go with the Prom Center because it was food and venue in one,” Stephanie says. “It seemed too hard to try and find both a hall and a caterer.”
Prom offers wedding planning services to stressed-out brides-to-be, including menu options and serving style tips. The company provides linen tablecloths and napkins, an open bar if requested, and other extras. Staging and table centerpieces are included.
Stephanie noted that they appreciated the customizable menu options: The Carlsons selected a custom buffet of stuffed chicken breast, beef tenderloin with a blueberry demi-glaze, roasted red potatoes, green beans, and a mixed green salad with a potpourri of cranberries, blue cheese, pecans, and vinaigrette dressing.
“The service on the day was very good, and I felt like we were listened to,” Stephanie says. “It's been six months since we were married, and we're still getting compliments on the food and reception.”
