Pop-up restaurants, pop-up parks, pop-up boutiques—pop-up weddings? It may sound strange, but these “flash” ceremonies are becoming more popular for brides- and grooms-to-be who don’t necessarily want to deal with the stress and timeline of an extended engagement.
The way it works is: You and your future husband or wife decide you want to get married, but instead of waiting the traditional six months to a year before tying the knot, you get hitched within a matter of days or weeks. For example, at Pop! Wed Co., a Washington, D.C.–based company that caters to couples interested in these quickie ceremonies, you choose an available date and pick from a small predetermined list of venues. With a $500 deposit, the Pop! Wed Co. team will then work with you and your fiance/e to customize your dream ceremony and photo session.
"Pop-up weddings aren’t for everyone,” says co-founder Maggie Winters. “But if you like being spontaneous and adventurous, a pop-up wedding can be an epic way to celebrate your new marriage."
Local couple Mollie and Sam experienced a similar time-crunch when they were selected as the winning pair in Twin Cities Live’s “42 to Say I Do” contest. The high school sweethearts planned everything—from the engagement photos to the venue to the dress to the cake—in a matter of weeks. “The process was ‘yes, no.’ This is what I want, this is what I don’t want,” Mollie says. “We were so grateful that we had this team to help us plan. We could never have planned this wedding in 42 days without the vendors’ support."
On July 18, Mollie and Sam got married on live TV, and now that the craziness has subsided, they look back with no regrets. “What I liked about the 42 days was that we were already so in love,” Mollie says. “Whether it was a year or 42 days, the outcome was still that we were married, and that’s all that matters."
As for Pop! Wed Co., you may soon see them outside the D.C. area. “It’s super-secret right now, but let’s just say we are definitely planning to hit the road soon. However, we only offer our services in states where all couples can marry.” (Hey, that includes us Minnesotans!)
